How does CBD help with anxiety?

Experiencing anxiety is an occasional occurrence for most people. Feelings of anxiety can happen with a stressful incident at work, trouble at home or feeling overwhelmed at school. But for some, chronic stress is an ongoing daily experience, causing deep problems in everyday life. Most treatments for reducing anxiety are a combination of therapy and medication. Most medications federally approved to treat an anxiety disorder can be highly addictive and come with serious side effects. In the past few years, an alternative treatment has presented itself—CBD oils.

How Does CBD Help with Anxiety?

Cannabidiol (CBD)  is a chemical compound found in the Cannabis plant. When people think of Cannabis, it is synonymously of getting high. The Cannabis plant has 483 known compounds, and two of the most prevalent are Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD. Both have therapeutic effects, but only one is psychoactive. CBD comes from the hemp variety of Cannabis, making it low in THC but high in CBD. Marijuana plants have high THC and low CBD, resulting in the well-known euphoria brought on by smoking, ingesting or vaping.

Even though CBD and THC produce different effects in terms of “highness,” they do act the same way in the body. A few years ago scientists discovered the Endocannabinoid System, thanks to medical marijuana research, and started to learn about phytocannabinoids. THC and CBD both belong to this class of compounds, commonly referred to as cannabinoids.

The body naturally produces cannabinoids to help regulate mood, movement, cognition, and emotions. Both CBD and THC are cannabinoids, and when supplemented in a cream, tincture, edible, or vaped, they act in the same way as a naturally produced cannabinoid does. The Endocannabinoid System uses receptors to attach to the cannabinoid CBD to create homeostasis.

When you use CBD oil for anxiety, the hemp oil helps mitigate common symptoms including feeling overwhelmed, sweaty hands, racing heart rate, and flushing. Studies suggest that using oils for anxiety on a consistent health care regime helps prevent anxiety attacks, giving the person a sense of well-being and peace. CBD treatment for anxiety may help people to relax, sleep better, and worry less.

How to Use Cannabis Oil to Treat Anxiety

Doctors commonly prescribe serotonin reuptake inhibitors to treat anxiety like Prozac, Zoloft or Paxil. Another common medication for the treatment of anxiety is benzodiazepines. Yet all of these medications can have serious side effects, including insomnia, headaches, nausea and more. Stopping suddenly or long term use can cause addiction and withdrawal symptoms. While these medications are a potential treatment for anxiety, medical cannabis and CBD  are more natural and have less adverse effects.

CBD products come in a range of methods and dosages. Choices include creams, tinctures, edibles, and vaping. Since CBD has no psychoactive effects, the anxiety-relieving option is legal to purchase in all 50 states.

One common misconception of CBD is that you need high doses to be effective. While CBD dosage changes depending on the quality and treatment program, research shows that low amounts provide relief from anxiety.

Generalized Anxiety

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, a generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is anytime you feel excessive worry throughout six months or more. The fear and concern overflow into everything from one’s professional to personal life. Living in a state of constant anxiety causes serious problems, making it hard to live normally.

Common symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder include:

  • Feeling excessively tired
  • Extremely stressed and worried
  • Tightly wound muscles
  • Feeling irritable or edgy
  • Inability to control worry

  • Insomnia

Phobia-Related Disorders

Social Anxiety Disorder

To avoid social anxiety, people will avoid situations and people that bring out extreme fear.

Panic Disorder

People with this disorder experience sudden and uncontrollable panic attacks. The attacks come on suddenly and reach their peak within minutes. Causes for the panic attacks come on unexpectedly or from a trigger or situation.

  • Excessive sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Feelings of doom
  • Feeling out of control
  • Shortness of breath

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder caused by a specific traumatic event like a death, car accident, natural disaster, or chronic physical or sexual abuse. People relieve the situation for more than 30 days after the occurrence. Even those who haven’t experienced the event themselves (family members or close friends) might also have symptoms of PTSD.

Signs of PTSD vary from experiencing waking flashbacks, terrible nightmares, insomnia, and irritability. People also experience extreme fear and try to reduce anxiety by avoiding triggers, people, and any connection to the event itself.

Anxiety is a severe mental health issue affecting more than 18.1 million people. For some, it has life-changing consequences and results in extreme fear and inability to cope with daily life. One solution is CBD. Cannabidiol is a safe and effective way to live normally.
